Hanukkah 2010 begins on Wednesday evening, Dec. 1. When Americans celebrate Hanukkah in the Jewish calendar 5771, we are starting to complete the first decade of the 21st Century, and what a decade it was.

The economy, both at home and in most developed countries, is still uncertain. Most of us still ask, how much we have another Great Depression, and some are still waiting to drop the other shoe to leave.

Hanukkah is a time of heroes, people who have performed miracles, and no matter what the cynics may say, heroism is not dead yet and there really are heroes in our world.
In fact, the real heroes of today may be much closer than we think. You can save even looked at us when we look in the mirror. And that's where the story of Hanukkah comes in.
Most of us, Jewish or not, fight some knowledge of the history of the brave, strong Judah Maccabee to liberate the Temple of Jerusalem. But we remember that it is a small town boy with little institutional or material resources at his disposal when he started his career? In all likelihood, there was little special Judah and his family in their reality and their determination was a challenge they saw an opportunity.
In a culture that too often replaced the celebrity of heroism and cynicism of sophistication, we must remember that part of history, too. This is the part that reminds us that everyone is already a hero, or at least has the capacity to be.
Each of us, according to Rabbi Abraham Isaac Kook, is a lively Hanukkah candles can spread our own inner light of the world and live in a story of heroism in doing so. Each of us can live our deeply held values in order to improve not only our own lives, but to contribute to the lives of those with whom we live and work.
Rabbi Kook, knows that true heroism begins with a sense of his own performance and minimize the need to resist the urge to raise itself or the bond and use the best possible way.
What we share with Judah Maccabee? Potential for heroism. At a time when people question whether there really is more of a hero, Hanukkah reminds us that there are always heroes, and we - if we give ourselves permission.
