Four Americans held hostage by Somali pirates off East Africa killed by their captors on Monday, said the U.S. military, the first time, U.S. citizens in a wave of attacks by pirates plaguing the Gulf of Aden and the Indian Ocean killed over the years.

Minutes before the army said the four Americans were killed, a Somali pirate told The Associated Press by telephone that when the boat was attacked, "the hostages will be the first to go."

"Some hackers have even suggested that the rigging of the boat with landmines and explosives exploded just as the whole yacht with the first shot," said the pirate, who gave his name as Mohamed Abdullahi, who held a friend of the pirate, the four stressed Americans.

Graeme Gibbon-Brooks, director of Dryad Maritime Intelligence, "he said after the turn of events was confused.

"We hear threats against the lives of Americans before, but it seems very, very unusual, why they almost kill the hostages," he said, adding that the pirates have to recognize that killing Americans would be to invite a military response.

The military said that U.S. forces are in control of research for about three days since shortly after the attack by pirates on Friday. Four warships, including aircraft carriers.

Last week, a Somali pirate has been sentenced to 33 years imprisonment by a court in New York for the 2009 hijacking of the "Maersk Alabama," an American ship. The hijacking ended when Marine snipers killed two pirates possession of the master.
