Age 75 after cancer has lost a battle with another wonderfully colorful Hollywood Players: The always pleasant Kenneth Mars, a veteran of dozens of films (especially Mel Brooks and Woody Allen) is past. For many of my generation (let alone tell by my father), March was a first face and a "name" Second - but we do no less for that.
To watch a child "Young Frankenstein", for example, there are many things that could fly right on the head. But the really stupid posts by Kenneth Mars, Marty Feldman as flowers on a huge neon-movie monster of 8 years. His weird comic performance as Inspector Kemp has always been one of my favorites, but when I saw a bit of Mars and more work in "The Producers" I knew that this man was a talented actor in particular. In other words: It takes a certain talent an admirer of Hitler in Nazi madman playing a big joke and not so ugly, unpleasant or disagreeable. the performance of Mr. Mars as Franz Liebkind was nothing of the sort.
But Mel Brooks was not the only employer, Kenneth Mars appreciated. Disney has struck the man, the more important role on protection measures Papa Ariel in the play "The Little Mermaid", Woody Allen hired the man for "Radio Days" and "Shadows and Fog", and provided Mr Mars strength of character to work as directors Herbert Ross (the Protocol), Michael Ritchie ("Fletch") and Alexander Payne ("Citizen Ruth"). The man has probably three times the television work he did on the big screen, but fans of the two media have lost a companion well today.
Hit the jump for some of our favorite moments from Mars. And of course, our most sincere condolences to the family late actor. He will be missed.
