Hal GoodTree story

Cary, NC - With more than six inches of snowfall during the night in Cary, it is a good time to catch up on some favorite holiday movie.

holiday films are an integral part of the film studio. Over the decades, some films have passed the pack to become classics. Here are my top picks in three categories: classical, contemporary and overlooked gems in the genre of holiday films.

Holiday Classic Movies

A Christmas Carol - Dickens' A Christmas Carol is based on the story of Charles, has adapted the film for at least 20 times between 1901 and 2009. But perhaps the best version 1951 with Alistair Sim. It is called U.S. A Christmas Carol Scrooge in the U.S., but in the United Kingdom, where it was made.

It's a Wonderful Life - 1946, directed by Frank Capra. Starring James Stewart, Donna Read, and Lionel Barrymore. It is everyone's favorite Christmas movie with an uplifting story, great performances, great script and fabulous Hollywood movie. If you liked Beautiful snowy weekend of living is the perfect time for other Capra classics as Lost Horizon (1937, Ronald Coleman and Jane Wyatt), Mr. Smith Goes to Washington (1939, with Jimmy Stewart) and the State of the Union (1948 Tracy / Hepburn).

White Christmas - Bing Crosby and Danny Kaye made. Michael Curtiz 1954 The Bingle at its best, evokes an optimistic view of soft carols perfectly captured by Irving Berlin. Goes well with hot chocolate and marshmallows.

Contemporary holiday movies

Santa Claus - 1994, with Tim Allen and Judge Reinhold. I just think that Tim Allen is a talented comedian. Undervalued. It is not as bad as Robin Williams or Tom Hanks accepted. It is not larger than life, like Eddie Murphy. But I always liked his work, goes back to visit the men are pigs before he got his own TV show. Special mention to Elf (2003, Tim Ferrell), While You Were Sleeping (1995, Sandra Bullock and Bill Pullman) and Home Alone (1990, with Macauley Calkin).

The Muppet Christmas Carol - 1992. Scrooge's story again, but from the point of view of frogs and rats. A funny and original film with Michael Caine as Scrooge.

Polar Express - 2004, starring Tom Hanks and directed by Robert Zemeckis. Critics dislike Wonderful Life, when it came out, either.

Forgotten holiday films

The Inn of the Sixth Happiness - 1958, with Ingrid Bergman. One of the favorite movies of my mother, she was on WOR Channel 9 in New York during the holidays when I was a child. Based on the true story of Gladys Aylward (played by Bergman), an English woman in China before the Second World War, leading hundreds of children through the treacherous mountains to safety during the Japanese invasion.

The holly and the ivy - 1952, distributed by British Lion. With Ralph Richardson and Celia Holland. Very touching human drama of the priest and his family in the United Kingdom over the years. Britain has been devastated after the Second World War and its film industry does not deal with many films (compared to Hollywood). Other favorites (non-holiday) British films of the 1950s include the choice of Hobson (1954 with Charles Laughton and John Mills, directed by David Lean) and The Ladykillers (1955 with Alec Guinness and Peter Sellers).

The Nightmare Before Christmas - 1993, directed by Henry Selick Burton from a screenplay by Tim. Selick, a master of weird and wonderful animation, Coraline is also known for James and the Giant Peach in 2009 and published. Wins Nightmare of the original Christmas movie more tight repression Rizzo the Rat and the rest the Muppets by a hair.
