WASHINGTON, NJ - Prince Chunk, an abandoned animal, found fame as a big cat, died.
The white tabby, is estimated to weigh 44 pounds, died in his sleep, shortly after being diagnosed with a genetic form of heart disease, said his adoptive owner Vince Damiani of Turnersville. The cat was assumed that 12 years.
"We are deeply saddened," said Damiani, whose family launched earlier this year, the Prince Chunk, an organization that works to prevent roaming animals. "We will continue our efforts to Prince Chunk foundation for expanding memory. His legacy will continue."
Prince Chunk made headlines in August 2008 when its former owner lost their home and the cat was recorded in the Camden County Animal Shelter. Prince Chunk weight made him a celebrity, with appearances on national broadcasts such as "Good Morning America and Live with Regis and Kelly.
Over 500 people tried to adopt it.
Prince Chunk chunkiness but also came into question. Damiani said the cat weighed about 22 pounds when he moved to his home in Turnersville for summer 2008.
Damiani family to Prince Chunk Foundation in June provides temporary assistance, including free health care, cat veterinarians and dog owners in financial distress. The organization now operates in New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania and California, hopes to expand, but nationally.
While Prince Chunk died Sunday at the Facebook page of the organization announced Friday the death "with a very heavy heart."
Cat fans posted several messages of sadness as the day progressed.
