KOCHVILLE TOWNSHIP -- Local and regional vendors alike will be at The Saginaw Newsâ All About Women Expo until 8 p.m. tonight and again Saturday at Saginaw Valley State Universityâs Ryder Center.
âIâve never seen a show where so many people are so happy as they are here,â said Susan Breen, 58, of Saginaw Township. Breen is the owner of the Breen Collection, her self-created jewelry-making business.
Arbonne, an international health and wellness company with local Saginaw connections, is also represented.
âOur cornerstone product is our anti-aging line,â said Joyce White, a spokesperson for the company at the expo.
âThere are three things that people keep buying, even in bad economies,â said White. âTobacco, alcohol and skin care products.â
Arbonne has 10 vice presidents in Michigan, one being right in Saginaw, according to White.
A nurse practitioner by day, White said she joined Arbonne because she âsaw it as a way to impact lives in a way that (she) didnât think was possible, by giving women a choice about how they have to spend their day.â
Another woman who spoke about her path to empowerment through her entrepreneurial endeavors was Linda Carisse, 44, of Livonia, Mich.
Carisse and her family were selling gourmet dips at the expo. She said she began the business three years ago as a way to be able to stay home with her kids but also bring in money.
âIâve been a stay at home mom and when the economy got bad, I had to do something,â she said.
The result was Dollyâs Gourmet Dips, a business named for Carisseâs late mother.
âMy mother was always a creative person,â she said about starting a dip business.
Carisse and her husband, Allan, also 44, mainly travel within southeastern Michigan to promote their product. But, Allan Carisse said they have also gone to shows in Ohio and Chicago as well.
This is Dollyâs Gourmet Dipsâ third time at the All About Women Expo and Allan Carisse said they have always had a good response from the expo, despite the almost two hour trip to get here.
âThe people are friendly here and really down to earth,â he said. âItâs worth the trip.â
The expo continues until 8 p.m. tonight. It will also open at 9 a.m. tomorrow, with a mini-theme of mother-daughter day. It will run until 5 p.m.
Admission is $7 and about 200 vendors are set up with displays at the Ryder Center.
